Platinum is rarer than gold, and usually cheaper
Annual platinum production is a fraction of gold’s, yet it often trades below the gold price. The reason is demand: platinum’s biggest buyer is the car industry, for catalytic converters, and jewellery is a distant second. Gold has a monetary role platinum has never had, and that is what holds its price up.
Buying platinum jewellery in India
Platinum jewellery sold in India is normally 950 — 95% pure, alloyed with ruthenium or cobalt. Look for the PT950 mark and a Platinum Guild International assurance card. It is naturally white, so unlike white gold it never needs rhodium replating, which is the practical argument for paying the premium.
Platinum against white gold
They look alike on the day you buy them. White gold is yellow gold alloyed and plated; the plating wears and needs redoing every couple of years. Platinum is white all the way through and develops a patina rather than wearing thin. Platinum is denser, so the same ring weighs more and costs more for the metal alone.
Resale is the catch
India has a deep, liquid, second-hand market for gold in every town. It does not have one for platinum. Buy-back is usually limited to the shop that sold it, often at a wide discount. Treat platinum as something to wear, not as a store of value.
Frequently asked questions
Why is platinum cheaper than gold if it is rarer?
Price follows demand as well as supply. Platinum demand is industrial and cyclical; gold demand is monetary and constant.
Is platinum hallmarked in India?
BIS operates a hallmarking scheme for platinum jewellery. Insist on the PT950 mark and the assurance card.
Does platinum tarnish?
No. It develops a soft matte patina over time, which a jeweller can polish back if you prefer the shine.
These figures are derived from the international spot price converted at the day’s dollar rate, with a retail premium added for import duty, GST and dealer margin. They are indicative. Your jeweller’s board is the price you actually pay, and it will differ a little — making charges and hallmarking are extra.
