The Nifty 50 in one paragraph
Fifty of the largest and most liquid companies on the National Stock Exchange, weighted by free-float market capitalisation, spread across about a dozen sectors. It covers a larger share of Indian market capitalisation than the Sensex and is the index most derivatives and index funds are built on.
Why it is the trader’s index
Nifty futures and options are among the most heavily traded contracts in the world. That depth means the index reacts quickly, and that the level you see is backed by real volume rather than a handful of trades.
Sector weights matter more than the level
Financial services dominate the Nifty, with information technology, oil and gas and consumer goods some way behind. When the index moves sharply, the first question worth asking is which sector drove it — a bank-led rally and an IT-led rally say different things about the economy.
Using it as a benchmark
If an actively managed equity fund has not beaten the Nifty over five years after fees, the index fund was the better deal. Most have not. Compare your own returns against this index over the same period rather than against a headline number.
Frequently asked questions
How often is the Nifty 50 rebalanced?
The constituents are reviewed twice a year, with changes announced in advance.
Can I invest in the Nifty directly?
Not in the index itself, but index funds and ETFs track it for a very small fee.
Why does the Nifty differ from the Sensex on the same day?
Different constituents and different weights. The gap is usually small.
