Diesel is the price that moves the economy

Diesel powers trucks, buses, tractors, generators and railways, so its price feeds into the cost of almost everything that is transported. A sustained rise shows up in food prices weeks later. That link is why diesel was subsidised for so long and why it is still taxed slightly more lightly than petrol in most states.

Why diesel is usually cheaper than petrol

The break-even depends almost entirely on how far you drive: below roughly 1,200–1,500 km a month the premium rarely pays back before you sell. Several cities also restrict diesel vehicles over ten years old, which hits resale value.
