What moves the rupee
The trade balance — India imports more than it exports, which is a standing source of demand for dollars. Foreign investment flows into and out of Indian shares and bonds. The interest rate gap between the RBI and the US Federal Reserve. The crude price, because oil is the largest import. And RBI intervention, which smooths moves rather than setting a level.
Why a weaker rupee is not simply bad
It raises the cost of everything imported — oil, electronics, edible oil, foreign education — and makes dollar debt more expensive to service. It also makes Indian exports and services cheaper abroad, which helps IT, pharmaceuticals and textiles, and it raises the rupee value of inward remittances.
The rate you are quoted is not this rate
This is the interbank reference rate. A bank or exchange selling you dollars adds a spread, and a card issuer adds a foreign transaction fee on top. For a remittance, compare the all-in rate rather than the headline one — the difference on a large transfer is usually larger than the stated fee.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the bank’s rate worse than this one?
Banks quote a buying and a selling rate with a margin either side of the interbank rate, and add fees.
Does a falling rupee cause inflation?
It contributes to it, chiefly through imported fuel, and that feeds into transport and food costs.
Can I hold dollars in India?
Residents can hold foreign currency within the limits of the Liberalised Remittance Scheme and the rules on resident foreign currency accounts.
