Why India watches the crude price so closely
India imports well over 80% of the crude it consumes, so the price is a direct claim on the country’s foreign exchange. A sustained ten-dollar rise widens the current account deficit, pressures the rupee, and feeds into inflation through fuel and freight. It is the single most important external number for the Indian economy.
Brent and WTI
Brent is the North Sea benchmark and prices most internationally traded crude, including the grades India buys. WTI is the American benchmark. They usually move together with a few dollars between them. The Indian basket — a weighted mix of the sour and sweet grades actually imported — tracks Brent closely.
What moves it
OPEC+ production decisions, US shale output, inventories, the dollar, and geopolitics in the producing regions. Demand moves more slowly than supply, which is why the price can swing violently on a single announcement.
From the barrel to the pump
Crude has to be refined, transported, and taxed before it reaches you. Because tax is a large fixed share of the Indian pump price, a 20% fall in crude does not produce anything close to a 20% fall at the pump.
Frequently asked questions
Is this Brent or WTI?
Whichever benchmark the site is set to — Brent by default, because it is closer to what India imports.
Why is the price in dollars?
Crude is traded internationally in US dollars, which is why the rupee rate matters as much as the barrel price for Indian costs.
Does a falling crude price mean cheaper petrol?
Eventually and partially. Tax is a fixed share of the pump price and does not fall with crude.
