This calculator works out the corpus you need on the day you retire and the monthly SIP that gets you there, after accounting for inflation before and after retirement and whatever you have already saved.
How the corpus is calculated
Your current monthly expense is inflated to what it will cost at retirement. The corpus then has to fund that inflating expense for the whole of retirement, so it is valued using the inflation-adjusted real return — the return your investments earn above inflation once you have stopped working.
Why the numbers look large
₹50,000 a month today at 6% inflation is ₹2.87 lakh a month in 30 years. Funding that for 25 years takes a corpus well over ₹5 crore. The figure is startling, but it is what a fixed monthly need for a quarter of a century actually costs.
The three levers
Save more, retire later, or spend less in retirement. Of the three, delaying retirement by five years usually does the most, because it adds five years of compounding and removes five years of withdrawals at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
What return should I assume after retiring?
Lower than before — 6% to 8% — because the portfolio should be more conservative once you depend on it.
Does this include EPF and NPS?
Only if you enter them under existing savings. Add their projected value there, or model them separately.
What if I cannot invest the required SIP?
Start with what you can and step it up annually. A step-up SIP closes a surprisingly large gap over 20 years.
